‘Tony was employed to apply an existing brand to specific areas of our Cantor building within a tight timescale. He communicated well with us throughout the project and worked collaboratively with the Project Team and Department of Computing to deliver a set of designs that met the needs of ourselves and our multiple stake holders.’

SHU recently built a new building near the train station: the STEM atrium. Following the build, Rachel and Yvette from SHU commissioned a new brand called EXO for the atrium. EXO’s purpose was to represent the university’s Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics students and their successes.

With the brand created and rolled out inside the STEM atrium, EXO had a home. The only problem was the brand wasn’t living up to it’s potential — it didn’t exist outside of that building’s brochures and wall vinyls.

Idea Discussion
Idea Discussion
We met with relevant departments, discovering what the staff most wanted from the extension.
Capturing Ideas
Once enough ideas were captured, we sat down to think about which ones had the most potential.

Sheffield Institute of Arts director Sally Wade asked Marque to push the EXO brand further. Our goal was to impress visitors on open days while raising awareness of SHU’s student and alumni achievements.

Sally’s staff – Rachel, Yvette and I put ourselves in the perspective of students by walking around the building a few times to discuss ideas and develop those that would have the most impact. This allowed us to see the environment as the audience would, temporarily putting floor plans and photographs to one side.

After we gathered a good enough feel for the environment, we were keen to get the relevant department heads involved because our goal was partly to improve their work areas. After listening to their feedback we soldiered on, taking their ideas on board.

Trying ideas out

By extending and developing EXO inside SHU’s Cantor space we were able to give the building a fresh look and feel. Pictured are a range of the results – Wall Posters, Door Vinyls and Supergraphics.

In deciding to break areas up into coloured zones, we managed to add character to each environment while showcasing big wins of the specific computing departments.

Initially we had plenty of time to develop ideas, but we hit a hazard when another part of the university re-allocated some of the funds for the EXO project. This led to the deadline being moved forward, which proved a challenge to the three of us.

Some ideas didn't make it.

When the deadline was brought forwards we had to fast track some ideas, others didn’t make the cut.

Welcome To poster

We persevered and succeeded, leaving the staff and students thrilled with the result. Since the install thousands of people have seen the visuals, and the staff have embraced EXO as their own, building on the identity to create their own graphics and notices.

Rachel Doole
Project Officer at Sheffield Hallam University:

‘Tony worked flexibly and reliably throughout and provided an end to end service that included liaison with printers and departmental staff. The work Tony produced will enhance the learning environment for our students and staff both current and prospective and create a true sense of community for our Department of Computing.’
